SVC Faces Penn State Altoona in Playoffs
In spite of depleted numbers due to injuries, the Polar Bearcats won 2 of their last three games to capture the final playoff spot against Penn State Altoona. The face off will be Friday, February 24 at 7:30 PM at the Rostraver Ice Gardens.
To make the playoffs SVC bested a feisty Cal U team in an exciting 5-4 overtime victory. The match had all the makings of a high scoring affair with a 3-3 draw at the end of the first period, including two tallies by blue liner Cam Good. But the team gave all team gave all the fans a great senior day send off when Sam Paquin scored the game winner with less than one minute to go in the game. After a disappointing defeat to DII WVU, the team stormed back with an inspired effort in an away match against CCAC. CCAC grabbed a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period but St. Vincent exploded for 6 goals in the second and 2 in the third for solid 9-2 win. The team was lead with a 4 goal effort by Sam Paquin and 4 point games for Adam Ferguson and Stone Harberstroh. Senior Ron Rodi and freshman Eli Svonavec each scored their first goals with the team and Tyler Brinton made a deposit behind the CCAC goalie as well. Shane Brudnok recorded both victories to bring his career win mark to 29. SVC finished the regular season with 5-9-2 record.
Team Enters Thanksgiving Break at 3-4-2
The SVC icers have worked hard to climb close to the .500 mark and have one more opportunity to pull even with a final first semester match against CMU. The team has lacked consistent scoring but strong goaltending and tenacious play have made the squad competitive in most matches. Lack of depth rather than quality of play remains an issue on the blue line while the addition of several freshman have made a big difference up front. Injuries have had some impact in the lineup and games against Neuman and CMU have been canceled due to each being unable to field players for previously scheduled contests.
Sam Paquin leads the team in scoring while Adam Ferguson paces all players with 9 goals. Eli Reith bests all skaters with a plus 9 rating. Senior Shane Brudnok, already the all time leader in shots on goal, saves and minutes played in goal has a .915 save percentage. He needs three more wins to pass the 30 victory mark, a feat done only twice before in club history, by Bucky Holt C’08 with 30 and all time leader Andrew Tulley, C’04 who leads all goalies with 34.
